- A new statewide nonprofit, the Minnesota Bail Association (MBA), has launched to oppose the effort to eliminate cash bail in Minnesota, a change the Association warns would be devastating for public safety, crime victims, and taxpayers.
Much of that change, the Association says, has drawn almost no public attention. Minnesota is steadily moving away from secured bail through court policy and changes to state law, including a statute (Minn. Stat. § 244.18) that, by 2029, eliminates the supervision fees that help fund pretrial monitoring and shifts those costs onto counties and taxpayers. Few Minnesotans have heard about it. The Association breaks down what’s happening and what’s at stake at www.minnesotabailassociation.com.
“Eliminating cash bail would make Minnesota less safe and hand taxpayers the bill for a system that holds no one accountable,” said Derek Nelson, President of the Minnesota Bail Association. “We formed this association to fight for the people of Minnesota — and to make sure they see what’s being decided for them.”
The MBA is calling on every licensed bail agent and agency owner in the state to join.
