Muhammad Tahir Lakhani is a respected Tycoon in the Shipping Recycling Industry and an active member of the Propeller Club of the United States and Port of Monaco.
Mr. Tahir was born in Karachi Pakistan on 27th April 1962 into a well- respected family and has been very brilliant since his very young age. Being a sports lover in his younger years, he started playing tennis and continued to become a professional player at the international level. Having good directive in tennis, Mr Tahir Lakhani was honoured to represent at the Davis Cup and to play Junior Wimbledon as his major achievements in tennis.
After making remarkable achievements in sports, Muhammad Tahir Lakhani decided to explore the ship recycling industry and started his journey with his close friends ship recycling yard in his early 20s. He had supervised the movement of the cut steel plates which were commonly sold on-site to traders and spent his 3 years working very hard with the timing between 8 am to 8 pm whereas he learnt the skills dealing with several processes dealing into the industry.
Hereinafter with his involvement in the industry in Pakistan, he decided to start his business out of Pakistan and in 1985 moved to Dubai UAE. The process of his business was to buy old ships and sell them on to the recycling yards for decommissioning.
Mr. Tahir Lakhani Dubai was the first & the one ‘cash buyer’ of vessels to set up fully-fledged operations in the UAE, and the member of first Green Recycling Conference in Dubai, in partnership with international maritime publication Tradewinds.
In 1996, Mr. Tahir made one of the biggest ship demolition deals ever with the purchase of three ex-Adriatic Tankers VLCC’s in international waters off the UAE and delivered them to breakers in Pakistan. After the deal in 1997, his business became very successful and the biggest “cash buyer” of ships in the world with the buy and sell over 100 ships per year.
In 1999, Mr Tahir Lakhani considered that ship recycling business required the international platform so he decided to shift with his family to the UK and build up his connection in the industry to expand the business. Mr Tahir Lakhani continues to play an important role in promoting the UAE as an important regional and international hub for maritime trade and logistics.
After becoming a British citizen in 2009, Muhammad Tahir Lakhani continued to visit Dubai on a regular basis, expanding the business in both volume and scale, eventually moving back in 2014. He was honoured representing the UAE as the Vice Chairman of the UAE Shipping Association until 2019.
